Launching a contemporary worship service is never an easy task, and traditional churches have built-in difficulties that make it even harder.
Entrenched habits, incompatible facilities, financial worries and combative attitudes are just a handful of the common hurdles that have to be overcome.
You may be very successful as a worship leader in a traditional church. Chances are you’re a great organist or pianist. Your church may even be known for beautiful anthems sung by an excellent choir. You may have a bell choir that you proudly send out to perform in the community. But your church has decided start a contemporary worship service, and now you feel totally out of your element.
If you search the internet for help, you will find plenty of it. It will probably scare you to death. You’ll see flashy websites with pictures of thousands being led in song by trendy youngsters with guitars standing on impressive stages with amazing light shows. They usually have videos of artists sharing the inspiration for their latest worship songs in such lofty spiritual terms that it intimidates you into wondering if your faith is good enough for this.
You won’t find that here.
Being so heavenly minded that you are no earthly good is not going to help you much. Leading contemporary worship is certainly a spiritual undertaking, but there are a lot of nuts and bolts that have to be dealt with, too. This is about the nuts and bolts.
You don’t need to “go it alone.” I know that you have a church to support you, but you need a little outside advice for what you are trying to do. Chances are your church has been holding worship services in the same way for nearly a hundred years. Changing things will not be easy.
